“And the day came when the risk to remain tight in a bud was more painful than the risk it took to blossom.” ― Anaïs Nin

I first discovered this quote during a time in my life when I was challenged to grow and change in ways I never expected. When you think about it, this is life – a series of events we don’t anticipate and for which we are not fully prepared. It might be a sudden down-sizing at work, health problems, a relationship break-up, or issues with your in-laws. Even “positive” events like a wedding or birth of a child can bring unexpected stress into our lives.

Attempting to remain a “tight bud” by walling off the inevitable change – ignoring what is coming our way or adapting to it negatively – causes pain. When we embrace change and open ourselves to it, we may feel discomfort, but we also learn to find creative new ways to respond to these events. The blossoming represents our growth and when we grow, we can achieve our full potential.

The bud responds to the light, water, and warmth to become a beautiful flower. Similarly, life’s events encourage our growth and help us to realize and express our full beauty and potential.

Take good care,

Susan
